I'm fond of Jaiku, for several reasons, but it's got a long way to go. It's got more features, that's a win. It lacks a great deal of speed, that's a killer. Then there's the X factor of getting the people in it. No matter how broken, if the community is using the tool, it's the best tool. If I had to choose one and only one right now (apart from the community factor), Brightkite would win. Fast, lots of features, including easy pics.
OH, and, if Twitter knows what's good for it, they'll reconstruct from the inside-out and relaunch on a more reliable (i.e. scalable) infrastructure. Getting the community is the hard part; but they've got it, and loyal in the face of failure. It would be a huge fumble to not see that weather. Huge funding just hit, so it's possible.
